ISE Spring 2026 Newsletter: A Message from the Chair

Hello alumni, faculty and friends of the UF Department of Industrial & Systems Engineering.

There is so much happening and expansion in ISE facilities this semester. Weeks after Dr. Herbert Wertheim toured our towering 3D concrete construction printer (of which we made a concrete UF logo to greet him), we cut the ribbon to officially establish this game-changing technology as a teaching and research tool.

UF researchers creating AI models to detect sinkhole trouble

UF researchers are developing AI models that combine satellite imagery, soil data and weather patterns to detect early indicators of sinkholes and improve risk prediction across Florida.

New lab welcomes advanced metal 3D printing technology

Hidden within a controlled lab environment, UF’s new Renishaw AM-400 brings advanced metal 3D printing capabilities to students and researchers. The laser powder bed fusion system enables the creation of complex, lightweight components while opening new opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation.

Quest for helmet safety earns Ph.D. student top awards

Gustavo Paulon’s quest to design smarter, safer helmets for first responders has earned two best paper awards from the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society’s Occupational Ergonomics Technical Group (OETG).
